Remember that time when–all of a sudden–each of Rupert Murdoch’s news minions started defending him, despite the criticism he was receiving about his company hacking into murder victims’ phones? Or when an explosion in Norway was immediately labeled a Muslim terrorist attack, even though the attacker ended up being anti-Muslim? Perhaps most disconcerting was the Collateral Murder video, [...]
My recent interview with Dana-Maxx, fashion designer extraordinaire, went up on The Daily Brink today. Check out the full interview! You have said in previous interviews that one goal of your designs was to empower women. How do you do that? When I am designing, I think about the woman’s body, who she is, and [...]
…Reports the NY Times headline, but they’re not capable of doing much else, the article seems to imply. Throughout the two-page article, Neil MacFarquhar continually attributes the situation as one that Saleh, Saudi Arabia, and the US will have to resolve. Consider: …the officials’ contention that Mr. Saleh would return to power is also a testament to [...]
Today my third interview at The Daily Brink made its debut. Elvis, gun safes, and strange men in bars all appear before the third question, not to mention the naked women that come up later. So every “guitar god” must have a favorite guitar. What’s yours? I have an original 1960 Fender Stratocaster which Fender [...]
Last week Newsweek published another set of features (“How Dumb Are We?” and “How to Get Smart Again“) about the general public’s gross ignorance of American politics. I say “another” because it seems like every year someone releases a similar study; I have to wonder if American citizens are dumb or simply masochistic. The studies [...]
Today my second interview sashayed onto The Daily Brink. This week I met with actor Sevan Greene, who I wouldn’t mind being when I grow up. Read about Sevan as he weighs in on humor in genocide, brown-ness in Hollywood, and his opinions on Sarah McLaughlin ads. Also, my first f-word in print! I’ve come so [...]
When Lucía Peláez was very small, she read a novel under the covers. She read it in fragments, night after night, hiding it under the pillow. She had stolen it from the cedar bookshelf where her uncle kept his favorite books. As the years passed, Lucía travelled far. In search of phantoms, she walked over [...]
This week marked my entrance into the heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping world of Internet Writing. Check out my interview with Lisa J. Murphy, multi-dimensional artist and all-around awesome Canadian. Learn about the proofreading process for books aimed for the vision-impaired and what makes Lisa’s mom cry here at The Daily Brink. Excerpt Galore: Can you tell me [...]
Birds, crabs, and fish are dying. Heartbeats across species sputter and stall on the surface of ponds, on small town streets and roofs and porches. All over the world dead flocks of animals, all at once. An Australian has taken the murky subconscious of the US and turned it inside out, letting our secret longings [...]
When confronted with the panic of the elders about the rapid (d)evolution of art/media/literature/journalism/etc., I find myself coming back to the same mantra: The Revolution Doesn’t Need to Suck. Yes, things are changing. But if we can be aware of them and enthusiastic enough about the possibility of improvement, we can control the trajectory of [...]
In the role playing game known as The Real World, “Straight White Male” is the lowest difficulty setting there is.
This means that the default behaviors for almost all the non-player characters in the game are easier on you than they would be otherwise. The default barriers for completions of quests are lower. Your leveling-up thresholds come more quickly. You automatically gain entry to some parts of the map that others have to work for. The game is easier to play, automatically, and when you need help, by default it’s easier to get.
Voters overwhelmingly approved the creation of an affordable housing trust fund as well as an initial deposit of $200,000 at Tuesday night’s annual town meeting.
BAM. Community organizing win.

The Times poll finds 31 percent of voters see Romney favorably, while 38 percent see him favorably.
OH MY GOD, THE ATLANTIC, HIRE A GODDAMN COPYEDITOR.
I really need to break up with this publication before I pop a blood vessel. They have these teeny mistakes in practically every single article I read. I know most readers are just skimming these articles online, but that doesn’t give the writers the right to be so sloppy. If you can’t get the basic words right, are you getting your facts right? If you can’t take the time to read your article over again before you post it, why should I spend my time?
Writers are bitter and smug and uptight and psychologically unsound and there’s no one they hate more than another writer because a) they’re probably better than you are, and b) they can recognize the dead look in your eyes for what it is.
Ladies and gentlemen, Williams College in a nutshell.
(This is in the section of our paper dedicated to listing the calls security takes between issues.)
He said that he saw a Ugandan woman “pretending” to be possessed, and that it was “laughable.” When I asked about the cultural sensitivity of that statement after the presentation, he did not retract it.
So, yeah. The savior of the developing world, everyone.
Alas, there is no emoticon for lack-of-surprise.
and all I got was this sunburn and the unique experience of watching a baby bunny drown to death.
I break up with you, science.

Oh my god. Van Gogh was seeing the wind.
I saw this in oceanography Monday (el oh el me being forced to take science) and thought the same thing! Beautiful video.
This is an article about the disaster that wiped out hundreds of homes in the town I currently live in. I’ve been working on this stuff all year, so it’s nice to see it finally getting some larger press coverage.
From futuristic Japan to the Old West, and Red Dead Redemption’s beautiful scenery, largely untapped by virtual photographers due to it’s unchangeable third-person perspective and unavailability on PC.
Of course, it all proved too tempting for me, the shots were tricky to take but I think I got some good results.
<3 this blog.
15 years later I finally have this game. When I played the demo I didn’t have money to buy it and by the time I did it was insanely rare.
Now I have it and oh gosh I’m so very, very happy. Platformy surreally RPG-elementy adventurey goodness.
It’s fantastic.
I loved the demo of this game! I’m jealous, I’d love to take a whack at the full version.
I am so freaking excited for this game/concerned that I do not know anyone who will play it in front of me so I can watch.
I love when I take a risk and visit bands that I idolized when I was young. I miss Gwen Stefani; she was a great woman to look up to.
